Diane Morgan is one of the most distinctive comedy performers Britain has produced in the last twenty years.
To some viewers she is Philomena Cunk, the magnificently confident interviewer who understands almost nothing about the history she is explaining. To others she is Liz in Motherland, Kath in After Life, or Mandy Carter, the chaotic heroine of Mandy.
What connects those roles is timing. Morgan can hold a pause and flatten a line in a way that makes a simple question feel absurd. She also creates, writes and directs her own work, and in 2026 she added another hit with the BBC One sitcom Ann Droid.

How Old Is Diane Morgan and Where Is She From?
Diane Morgan was born on 5 October 1975 in Farnworth, Greater Manchester. She turned 51 in October 2026.
She grew up in Farnworth and Kearsley and attended George Tomlinson School in Kearsley, now known as Kearsley Academy. Her father, Peter, worked as a physiotherapist. Her mother, Eirwen, was a stay-at-home mother. Morgan has one elder brother, Stephen.
Comedy was valued at home. In interviews, Morgan has talked about being introduced by her father to classic performers such as Tony Hancock, and growing up on older comedy rather than pop culture. At 20, she studied at the East 15 Acting School in Loughton, Essex. Before regular acting work arrived, she supported herself with ordinary jobs public profiles have listed as a dental nurse or assistant, telemarketer, potato peeler, packing worming tablets and selling Avon products. That experience of badly paid, insecure work later fed directly into Mandy.
In July 2023, her home area recognised how far she had come. The University of Bolton awarded her an honorary Doctor of Arts degree for her contribution to television and comedy.
How Did Diane Morgan Get Started in Comedy?
A Small Early Role in Phoenix Nights
One of Morgan’s earliest television credits was a small role as Dawn in Peter Kay’s Phoenix Nights. It was no instant breakthrough: she spent years building a career through training, small parts, stand-up and sketch work.
Stand-Up Success in 2006
Morgan began performing stand-up in 2004. In 2006 she was placed second in the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year Award and was also a runner-up in the Funny Women Awards. Those results put her on the comedy map at exactly the moment her most important early partnership was forming.
Two Episodes of Mash With Joe Wilkinson
The winner of that Hackney Empire final was Joe Wilkinson. Morgan and Wilkinson went on to form the sketch double act Two Episodes of Mash.
From 2008, they performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe for three consecutive years with deliberately low-key, awkward sketches that leaned into pauses and mundane settings — qualities that later defined Morgan’s screen work. The duo appeared on Robert’s Web, made BBC radio series, and featured in BBC Three’s Live at the Electric. They later played a couple, Simon and Donna, in The Cockfields.

Philomena Cunk: The Role That Changed Everything
Morgan first played Philomena Cunk on Charlie Brooker’s Weekly Wipe, which ran in various forms from 2013 to 2020. Cunk began as a supporting creation: a presenter delivering a regular segment, including “Moments of Wonder”, with total seriousness and very little understanding.
The joke is precise. Cunk looks like a conventional documentary presenter, uses authoritative language and asks real experts serious-sounding questions — then the logic collapses, leaving academics trying to answer complete misunderstandings. Morgan never winks at the camera: Cunk appears to believe everything she says.
The Cunk Programmes in Order
- Charlie Brooker’s Weekly Wipe — Cunk’s first regular appearances, from 2013
- Cunk on Shakespeare — BBC Two special, 2016
- Cunk on Christmas — BBC Two special, 2016
- Cunk on Britain — Five-part BBC Two series, 2018
- Cunk and Other Humans — BBC Two shorts, 2019
- Charlie Brooker’s Antiviral Wipe — One-off special, 2020
- Cunk on Earth — Five-part BBC Two and Netflix series, 2022
- Cunk on Life — Extended one-off special, December 2024
- Cunk on Cinema — New three-part series announced for the BBC and Netflix in 2026
Cunk on Britain proved the character could carry a full series. Cunk on Earth took her global, premiering on BBC Two in September 2022 and reaching Netflix audiences in January 2023, tackling everything from early civilisation to the space race. It earned Morgan a BAFTA Television Award nomination for Best Female Comedy Performance. She has also published books in character, including Cunk on Everything (2018) and The World According to Cunk (2024). Cunk on Life (December 2024) earned her a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special.
Liz in Motherland: The Sitcom Favourite

If Cunk made Morgan famous, Motherland made her a sitcom favourite with a different audience.
From 2016 to 2022, Morgan played Liz in the BBC Two comedy Motherland, across three series and Christmas specials. The BAFTA-winning show follows a group of parents navigating school runs, parties, friendships and the social politics of parenting in London.
Liz is the blunt counterweight to that world: chaotic, loyal and often the funniest person in the room because she is not trying to impress anyone. The role showed Morgan did not need a mock-documentary format to land a joke, and Liz became one of the show’s most quoted characters. Morgan returned for the Christmas special in December 2022.
Kath in After Life
Morgan reached another global Netflix audience as Kath in Ricky Gervais’s dark comedy After Life, which ran for three series from 2019 to 2022.
Kath works alongside Gervais’s character Tony at the Tambury Gazette. She is earnest, lonely and tactless. In a series that moves between comedy and grief, Kath provides many of the broadest laughs, yet Morgan — appearing in all three series, 18 episodes in total — brings warmth to a character who could have been a simple punchline. For many Netflix viewers, Kath was their first introduction to her.
Mandy: The Show Diane Morgan Created Herself
Mandy is the clearest statement of Morgan as an auteur. She created the BBC Two comedy, writes it, directs it and stars in it as Mandy Carter. The character first appeared in a pilot in 2019, followed by a first full series in 2020.
Episodes are short — around 15 minutes — and built like live-action cartoons. Mandy drifts from one disastrous job or scheme to another, pursued by her benefits officer Jason (Tom Basden) and finding refuge with her friend Lola (Michelle Greenidge) in a beauty salon. Her dream is simple — breeding Doberman Pinschers. Her methods are not.
A second series aired in January 2022 and a third in March 2024. A fourth series was confirmed in January 2025 and aired on BBC Two from 21 July 2025, with six new episodes. For her performance in that fourth series, Morgan received another BAFTA Television Award nomination for Best Female Comedy Performance.
Her agency biography notes that all four series are available on BBC iPlayer, and you can check her full screen credits on her United Agents film, TV and theatre CV.
For series four of Mandy, Morgan told the BBC she insisted on using only cruelty-free make-up products not tested on animals.
Other Notable Roles and Screen Work
Morgan’s career is much wider than her four best-known characters. Selected highlights include:
- Fiona in Frayed — A series regular across two series of the Sky and HBO Max comedy-drama
- Donna in The Cockfields — Playing opposite Joe Wilkinson, her old Two Episodes of Mash partner
- Mandy in Rovers — A regular role in the Sky comedy set around a non-league football club
- Gemma Nerrick in Death to 2020 and Death to 2021 — Part of the ensemble in the Netflix year-in-review specials
- Charlotte in Intelligence — In the Sky comedy starring David Schwimmer and Nick Mohammed
- Maureen in The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin — Apple TV comedy appearance
- Onya Doorstep in Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl — Voice of the local news reporter in Aardman’s 2024 film
- Voice work — Including the Gryphon in Netflix’s The Sandman
She has also guested on and, in May 2023, hosted Have I Got News for You, and was announced in August 2025 as a contestant on series two of LOL: Last One Laughing UK.
Diane Morgan’s Latest Work: Ann Droid and What Comes Next
Morgan’s biggest new role of 2026 is not Cunk and not Mandy. It is a robot.
Ann Droid (2026)

Ann Droid premiered on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on 17 July 2026. Morgan created the sitcom and co-wrote all six episodes with Sarah Kendall.
Set in 2029, the series stars Morgan as Linda, a pre-loved AnnDroid Z58/100 Basic Eldercare Robot bought by Michael (Paul Ready, her former Motherland co-star) for his widowed mother Sue (Sue Johnston). Michael is moving out to repair his marriage, and Linda is meant to keep Sue company and monitor her health. Sue first sees her as a nuisance, then realises a tireless robot is useful for settling scores and doing jobs her son never gets round to.
The show became one of the BBC’s biggest comedy launches of the year. As Radio Times reported on the second-series confirmation, the first episode attracted 7.6 million viewers within 28 days, making it the BBC’s second-biggest new scripted launch of 2026 at that point, behind Small Prophets. In August 2026, at the Edinburgh TV Festival, the BBC commissioned a second six-part series, with Morgan and Johnston returning as Linda and Sue.
Ann Droid combines the deadpan physical discipline of Cunk, the warmth of Motherland and the authorship of Mandy in a single role that requires Morgan, quite literally, not to blink.
Cunk Returns
Cunk is not finished either. In 2026, a new three-part series, Cunk on Cinema, was commissioned for the BBC and Netflix, with Morgan returning and Charlie Brooker leading the writing team, to trace the history of film from the first cameras to CGI and AI.
Diane Morgan’s Partner and Personal Life
Morgan keeps her personal life comparatively private, so this section sticks to what is on the public record from reputable reporting.
Who Is Diane Morgan’s Partner?
Morgan’s partner, as publicly reported since at least 2017, is Ben Caudell, a television comedy producer and commissioning editor who has worked for the BBC and Channel 4. Profiles report that the couple live together in Bloomsbury, London.
Caudell is also a professional collaborator, credited as a writer on Mandy and among the writers on Cunk on Earth. Morgan is not publicly reported to be married.
Children, Her Dog and Animal Work
Morgan has said publicly and repeatedly in interviews that she has never wanted children, and she has joked that working on Motherland — a show about the exhausting realities of parenting — only confirmed that view.
She adopted a rescue dog, Bobby, in 2019. Bobby, credited as Robert “Bovril” Morgan, appeared in the Mandy Christmas special in 2021. Morgan is vegan, by her own public statements, and an animal rights supporter, and in 2025 became patron of a cat rescue charity in South Wales, according to public reporting.
Tracing Her Family History
In June 2025, Morgan appeared in the BBC genealogy series Who Do You Think You Are?, exploring the Scottish, Welsh and German strands of her family history, along with First World War and Industrial Revolution stories from her home area.
Why Diane Morgan’s Comedy Works
Three things set Morgan apart: discipline — Cunk and Linda depend on restraint; authorship — with Mandy and Ann Droid she creates the world rather than waiting to be cast; and background — her characters often live hand to mouth or work bad jobs, a life she knows well enough to play without condescension. At 51, she is in the most successful period of her career.
